adding your own items to Amazon

You need to be a pro merchant to do this - I think it's well worth the $40 bux a month they charge just for this service - I sold 2 Kiss records last week - The Elder and Kiss AliveII for $25 each - paid a dollar each at a yard sale. You can get a lot higher prices on Amazon than on Ebay and the traffic puts GEMM to shame.

new UK company selling soul vinyl

Just heard a release of Dyke and the Blazers on 180 gram vinyl by Ace Records out of the UK. I emailed for wholesale info, but haven't heard back yet. Their website is acerecords.com. Lots of cool soul stuff from the 50's and '60's. I definitely want to stock these guys!

new lp to cd transfer ELP Declicker

Just saw this on the net:

ELP Declicker, $2,500 US

For the serious audiophile, the Declicker works with your turntable to convert those old vinyl records into a digital format. True to its name, the Declicker removes the clicks and background noise from a record in real-time without having to use a computer. The Declicker is optimized to work with 33 and 45 RPM records and while it works with 78 RPM, it won't be as effective at removing the clicks and crackles. Preview the Declicker online at www.elpj.com/purchase/declicker.php.

I think I would use the $2500 to buy more records! For those of you who do transfers for people, it would be worth looking it. For a private collector, I can't see it being worth it.

If you're happy with your order, please consider leaving feedback. If you're not happy with your order, please contact me before leaving feedback and I'll make it right.

some more classified sites

Here's some more classified sites - Oodle.com, MetaExchange.com, and backpage.com. I like oodle the best, it scans a whole bunch of sites. You can determine the parameters of the search and also how you post. Metaexchange looks interesting in their concept of a stock market for collectible, but it remains to be seen if they get enough traffic

$50 coupon for signing up with MSN's adCenter

Just follow this link. Got mine yesterday - have been playing around with it, hoping to drive some traffic to my mojo nixon stuff. This might also work for rare albums - if it's a $200 lp or incredibly rare northern soul 45, it might be worth spending $5 on 100 clicks for it - for most of what we sell, I can't see there being any competition.

searching craigslist w/ an RSS feed

Check out this site Craig2mail.com - it lets you set up custom searches on craigslist with your keywords and categories. I've poked around it - so far the only drawback I see is you can't combine searches, so you have to keep going back. Other than that, it's going to be great being able to be the first to know about records in my area being posted on Craigslist.

The other three releases include a reissue of the 2002 breakthrough debut from TAKING BACK SUNDAY, "Tell All Your Friends", as well as a new pressing of BLOOD FOR BLOOD's classic "Revenge On Society". "ANGELO STARR - STAND ON MY OWN TWO FEET" and
"VANESSA HAYNES - LEAVING THE SCENE OF THE CRIME"

The Northern Soul Story Vol 1 - The Twisted Wheel
The Northern Soul Story Vol 2 - The Golden Torch
The Northern Soul Story Vol 3 - Blackpool Mecca
The Northern Soul Story Vol 4 - Wigan Casino

The Northern Soul phenomenon was one of the biggest
musical movements of the 1970s in the UK. At its height
thousands of party people would descend on the clubs
and venues of the scene every weekend for all-night parties,
driven by high octane soul music. The four volumes of
this series trace the history of the scene via four of
the greatest clubs on the circuit, and in the course of
this, they present the most definitive, best researched
and most authoritatively annotated survey of Northern Soul
ever released on CD in the UK. Each album comes with a
12 page full colour booklet featuring in depth liner notes,
photos and full discographical information.
These compilations are essential listening for any fan of
soul music and are an important document of one of the
most essential musical movements the UK has ever produced.

if you need some inspiration, type in northern soul in search on ebay, then sort from high price to low. Wow! Look at some of those prices- then, quick, go check your 45 backstock to see if you have any. Blue Note deep groove pressing of Kenny Dorham

Rare Blue Note deep groove preesing of Kenny Dorham's Quiet Kenny is up for grabs on eBay right now - bidding is fast and furious with 12 bids topping out at $1091, with time still left. That's right, over a grand. Always be checking those old Blue Notes for the deep groove - most of 'em are worth bucks. Pick up a Goldmine jazz price guide - it's invaluable for picking out the different label variations. eBays rendered most of the prices passe, but it's still useful for determining a $20 lp from a $200 one.

new source for vinyl!

I found a new source for untapped vinyl. I made contacts at the various recycling stations around and offered to pick up their records and books for free. Lotsa crap that ends up being recycled, but a bunch of stuff comes in that I can use in lots on eBay and some nice individual lps & 45s I can list on GEMM or Amazon. Some of the vinyl, if you're lucky enough to still have a vinyl store around, can be traded in there for credit to buy better individual pieces to sell on ebay or Gemm. Good luck hunting!

using SKU's to manage your inventory

The easiest way to manage your inventory once you get beyond a few hundred items is SKU - stockkeeping units. Start at 1001 for the first, 1002 for the 2nd,etc. Both Amazon & Gemm support SKU's in their inventory uploads from Excel spreadsheets. Use removable stickers to put each number on the stock unit. Then keep the stock in boxes labeled on the outside with the SKU's it contains, ie, 1001-1100. Over time, you can combine boxes as you sell off stock.

This system prevents you from selling the NM copy of the lp for the VG copy, since they have different numbers and are separated by other inventory. Also makes picking a breeze and filing inventory a snap - just start numbering where you left off and put the inventory at the end of the last box!

Steve Weber gives a more combrehensive overview in his book - check out his website at weberbooks.com. It's geared towards bookselling, but still lots of good info regarding online selling.

just discovered a cool stie - etsy.com, an arts & crafts site. How to list lp lots on Amazon

Amazon raises shipping allowances

Amazon released it's revised shipping rates - obviously the music one is geared for dvd & cd sellers, not record sellers. Just make sure you charge enough for the lp to eat some of the postage cost and the cost of the mailer and padding. The lowest price I've seen for an lp on Amazon has been $19.95, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Looking for titles of oop cds?

You can go to the cd category on ebay, type "oop" in the search bar, and then rank listing from most expensive to cheapest. If you go down the lefthand sidebar and click on completed auctions, you can see what's actually selling, as opposed to "wishing for" prices.

Or you can go to weberbooks.com - on the right hand sidebar he has the Amazon buyers waiting list available for cds ranked from high price on down.

If you go out scouting with a PDA, one of these files will come in handy if you're debating whether or not to buy that cd - some of the soundtrack prices might surprise you. Bull Durham for $64 - whodda thunk?

Good luck hunting!

buying sources for LPs & 45s

need more inventory? try these ideas - post a wanted ad on craigslist. Join the local freecycle and cheapcycle orgs in your area - also a good way to get rid of your dead stock! Put ads in your local shopper & alternative papers - the local alternative paper has been my single best wanted to buy ad.

Go to vistaprint.com and get free (except for s&h) business cards. Post on bulletin boards, laundromats, etc. Hand them out to your local pawnshops - people are always asking them to take lps & 45s.

Go to booksalefinder.com and sign up for the email newsletter. Most booksales have vinyl for sale as well as cds.

And don't forget the upcoming yard sales season!

some Pink Floyd lp prices on Amazon

just checked some Floyd vinyl lp prices on Amazon - $34.99 for Dark Side, $50 for the Wall, Animals is 9.99, Meddle, Piper at the Gates of Dawn unavailable. Meanwhile, Pink Floyd lp lots on eBay are going for $3-$8 per lp. Methinks me smells an arbitrage opportunity....

Shipping your 45s & LPs

This is one of the most oft repeated questions on the boards at Ebay, right after "How much is this record worth". For small quantities of shipping supplies, check out your local pizza place - the large corrugated boxes work well for lps - I can fit up to 12 lps in a box with padding. Personal size pizza boxes work well for 45s. Use junk lp covers as padding top & bottom, with styrofoam peanuts around the sides. Don't buy your peanuts - I find a lot of freebies at frame shops and head shops (think bongs). For larger quantities, check out Something Special Enterprises PO Box 74, Allison Park, PA 15101 412/487-2626 or Bags Unlimited (see links). Your customers will love you if you also use the protective sleeves both places sell. If you buy in large enough quantities, selling the sleeves to your customers is a nice little add-on sale.

For cds, padded envelopes work great. Search on ebay - I've had good luck with eshippingsupply. But check out who's got the best deal including shipping to your location.

For just a few records, USPS media mail is the best. For larger lots, check UPS's prices.

where to sell 45s LPs 78s on line

By far away the best site for me is ebay. For common records that aren't worth shipping, I post an ad on craigslist. Plus it's free. I usually lot them up by genre and sell them that way. Third in terms of sales for me is Amazon, but when I get more listed, that's going to go up.

I've tried Musicstack in the past, but didn't have any luck. I'm still signed up on Buybundle (they're still free, and when they start charging it'll be commission only)which lists my Amazon inventory on gbase. I've tried Alibris, too, which lets you list vinyl lps & cassettes, but no luck. Most of the vendors on there tend to be higher end booksellers, so it may not be the target audience for music sellers. Some of my inventory is also listed on GEMM.com, but sales are few and far between.

GEMM doesn't charge a listing fee, nor does Amazon. You can download a sample spreadsheet from both places, combine them, and then post your listings to both places, which cuts your listing time. Alibris also supports this, but they charge a monthly fee depnending on how many items you list. Chrislands can take your Amazon listings and post them on your own website. Many booksellers love them, but I don't have any feedback for music sellers.

Also check out Goldmine magazine - especially for the definitions of record grading!

For 78's, the only ones I've found worth listing on eBay were early rock 'n roll, some jazz, and blues (how i wish I could find more of that). For other 78's, send $2 for this list: Docks, PO Box 691035, San Antonio, TX 78269. They'll send you a comprehensive listing of what labels and types of music on 78 they'll buy. Usually a few bucks a disc, but hey, it's a cash buyer.

why i've started this blog

There seems to be plenty of resources for selling vinyl records on the web, but no spot tying them altogether. My aim here is to be a resource for online vinyl dealers, but also acting as a clearinghouse for the general public with their vinyl selling questions.

Me - i've been involved with selling music for most of my life, starting as a teenager working at Second Coming Records in Greenwich Village. I owned a b&m record store for 15 years, now selling exclusively online. I sell on ebay, amazon, buybundle/gbase, gemm and craigslist. I've tried a few of the others, such as Musicstack.

So my first tip is to start listing your vinyl on Amazon. If you're already a pro merchant, you can create your own pages to list. If not, hope someone else has already created a page for the lp you want to sell. BTW, you can also list cassettes now. My first sale was Pink Floyd's The Wall, gatefold version, vg/vg for $20!
